Book Club: The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner

This month we’ll be discussing the first three books in Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series.

The Queen's Thief series centers around Eugenedies, a/k/a Gen, a young thief whom we first meet in The Thief as a prisoner in the king's dungeon.  He is summoned by the king's magus to help steal a powerful treasure from the neighboring kingdom of Attolia... and his journey begins.

The success of this series, I think, lies largely in Gen's character.  He's smart, he's complex, he's funny... and he always outsmarts not only his opponents, but also the reader.  One of the most fascinating things about this series is how in each book, our view of Gen zooms out farther... and yet in each book, we get to know him better.

For those of you who haven’t read these books yet, what are you waiting for?  And for those who have, I probably don’t have to tell you that the fourth book in the series, A Conspiracy of Kings, was just published last week.

I've done my best to avoid spoilers in this post, which has involved a lot of deleting, but spoiler away in the comments.  (About the first 3 books – NOT about A Conspiracy of Kings, please!)  I’m going to be offline for Passover starting tonight, so my co-MWT-fangirl Cindy Pon will be moderating the discussion.
